For there was a command from the king concerning them, and a settled provision for the singers, as was required every day.


For their hunger you gave them bread from heaven, and for their thirst you brought water for them out of the rock, and you told them to go in to possess the land that you swore to give them.


You gave your good spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and gave them water for their thirst.


They asked, and he brought quails, and gave them food from heaven in abundance.


Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven;


He cried out to the Lord; and the Lord showed him a piece of wood; he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and an ordinance and there he put them to the test.


When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.


Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that I need,


Give us this day our daily bread.


Give us each day our daily bread.


and all ate the same spiritual food,


and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good.


Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments.


Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
