Now there was a Jew in the citadel of Susa whose name was Mordecai son of Jair son of Shimei son of Kish, a Benjaminite.


“All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that if any man or woman goes to the king inside the inner court without being called, there is but one law—all alike are to be put to death. Only if the king holds out the golden scepter to someone, may that person live. I myself have not been called to come in to the king for thirty days.”


“Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will also fast as you do. After that I will go to the king, though it is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.”


Mordecai then went away and did everything as Esther had ordered him.


The king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king's palace to speak to the king about having Mordecai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for him.


Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king, wearing royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown and a mantle of fine linen and purple, while the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced.


“See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.


What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces.


Therefore command the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise his disciples may go and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deception would be worse than the first.”


so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.


To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
