Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.


The words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.


I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem,


I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.


And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a chasing after wind.


Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.


So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a chasing after wind.


Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from one person's envy of another. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.


For who knows what is good for mortals while they live the few days of their vain life, which they pass like a shadow? For who can tell them what will be after them under the sun?


No one has power over the wind to restrain the wind, or power over the day of death; there is no discharge from the battle, nor does wickedness deliver those who practice it.
