They made a calf at Horeb and worshiped a cast image.


Therefore he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them.


When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel.


Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called on his name. They cried to the Lord, and he answered them.


And the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.


The Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”


He said: I hereby make a covenant. Before all your people I will perform marvels, such as have not been performed in all the earth or in any nation; and all the people among whom you live shall see the work of the Lord; for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.


But the people cried out to Moses; and Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire abated.


I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I had done the first time. And once again the Lord listened to me. The Lord was unwilling to destroy you.


for then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and he will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain and the land will yield no fruit; then you will perish quickly off the good land that the Lord is giving you.


The Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him, but I interceded also on behalf of Aaron at that same time.


Even at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you.


Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”)
