Paul went on also to Derbe and to Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer; but his father was a Greek.


Also some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers debated with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign divinities.” (This was because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.)


Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there would spend their time in nothing but telling or hearing something new.


Claiming to be wise, they became fools;


Much, in every way. For in the first place the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.


Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish.


For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”


Do not let anyone disqualify you, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, dwelling on visions, puffed up without cause by a human way of thinking,


See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ.


Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring.


So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.


that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.


To Timothy, my loyal child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.


and not to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies that promote speculations rather than the divine training that is known by faith.


Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk,


This means understanding that the law is laid down not for the innocent but for the lawless and disobedient, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers,


Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives' tales. Train yourself in godliness,


But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.


to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ,


You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus;


Avoid profane chatter, for it will lead people into more and more impiety,


not paying attention to Jewish myths or to commandments of those who reject the truth.


To Titus, my loyal child in the faith we share: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.


He must have a firm grasp of the word that is trustworthy in accordance with the teaching, so that he may be able both to preach with sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.


But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.


Remember then what you received and heard; obey it, and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you.
