“The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly to us, and charged us with spying on the land.


When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke harshly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”


But the people of Israel answered the people of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, and in David also we have more than you. Why then did you despise us? and spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”


Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! Take care that you do not see my face again, for on the day you see my face you shall die.”


But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should heed him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.”


The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.


The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked what is perverse.


Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm.


A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.


The poor use entreaties, but the rich answer roughly.


Words spoken by the wise bring them favor, but the lips of fools consume them.


—and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity.


But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.


Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”
