which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy.


Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful; but time and chance happen to them all.


If you have raced with foot-runners and they have wearied you, how will you compete with horses? And if in a safe land you fall down, how will you fare in the thickets of the Jordan?


I spoke to the prophets; it was I who multiplied visions, and through the prophets I will bring destruction.


Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?


Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is sacrificed on the altar?


I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.


So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air;


I went up in response to a revelation. Then I laid before them (though only in a private meeting with the acknowledged leaders) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure that I was not running, or had not run, in vain.


You were running well; who prevented you from obeying the truth?


It is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.


Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.


I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.


Do not let anyone disqualify you, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, dwelling on visions, puffed up without cause by a human way of thinking,


Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,


Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.


I am coming soon; hold fast to what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.
