‘But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious in leaving us a remnant and giving us a firm place in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes and a little relief in our bondage.


The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.


The poorest of the poor will find pasture, and the needy will lie down in safety. But your root I will destroy by famine; it will slay your survivors.


What answer shall be given to the envoys of that nation? ‘The Lord has established Zion, and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.’


Once more the humble will rejoice in the Lord; the needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.


Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.


And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.’


‘But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.


In those days, at that time,’ declares the Lord, ‘search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for the sins of Judah, but none will be found, for I will forgive the remnant I spare.


‘ “But I will spare some, for some of you will escape the sword when you are scattered among the lands and nations.


who will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, the land of Nimrod with drawn sword. He will deliver us from the Assyrians when they invade our land and march across our borders.


The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him,


It was revoked on that day, and so the oppressed of the flock who were watching me knew it was the word of the Lord.


So I shepherded the flock marked for slaughter, particularly the oppressed of the flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favour and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock.


the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.


In his name the nations will put their hope.’


‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.


And again, Isaiah says, ‘The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope.’


Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?


Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
