He answered, ‘While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, “Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.”


Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.


For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.


The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him – may your hearts live for ever!


In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.


In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth, humility and justice; let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.


Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.

You have not gone up to the breaches in the wall to repair it for the people of Israel so that it will stand firm in the battle on the day of the Lord.


Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unploughed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you.


Israel’s arrogance testifies against him, but despite all this he does not return to the Lord his God or search for him.


Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.’


This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah. Therefore love truth and peace.’


Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.


As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.


And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,


Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.


Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.


But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever! Amen.
