This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:


‘Son of man, if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its people and their animals,


‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: how much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem my four dreadful judgments – sword and famine and wild beasts and plague – to kill its men and their animals!


I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.


‘I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me,’ declares the Lord.


‘But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.’


You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little, because locusts will devour it.


After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem led Israel.


A young Levite from Bethlehem in Judah, who had been living within the clan of Judah,


left that town in search of some other place to stay. On his way he came to Micah’s house in the hill country of Ephraim.
