then from heaven, your dwelling-place, hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And forgive your people, who have sinned against you.


So he said he would destroy them – had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them.


Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.


‘Do not be angry, my lord,’ Aaron answered. ‘You know how prone these people are to evil.


In that day you will say: ‘I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me.


Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.


Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.


With it he touched my mouth and said, ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.’


In those days, at that time,’ declares the Lord, ‘search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for the sins of Judah, but none will be found, for I will forgive the remnant I spare.


Then, when I make atonement for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign Lord.” ’


Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.’


You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.


The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!


and none of the condemned things are to be found in your hands. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger, will show you mercy, and will have compassion on you. He will increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your ancestors –


Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants; he will take vengeance on his enemies and make atonement for his land and people.
