Perhaps the king will agree to deliver his servant from the hand of the man who is trying to cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.”


because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.


But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction.


You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,


He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.


to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death.’


Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.


May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor.


The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.


Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed – and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors – and they have no comforter.


‘The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the Lord will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.


‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,


So he replied to the messengers, ‘Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.


For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.


Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.


All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered round him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.
