Far be it from you to do such a thing – to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?’


But the Lord is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.’


Restore us again, God our Saviour, and put away your displeasure towards us.


You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.


In that day, the Lord will punish with his sword – his fierce, great and powerful sword – Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he will slay the monster of the sea.


My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; see, it descends in judgment on Edom, the people I have totally destroyed.


‘Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offences; then sin will not be your downfall.


It will seem like a false omen to those who have sworn allegiance to him, but he will remind them of their guilt and take them captive.


Say to them, “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?”


The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.


Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,


when I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand grasps it in judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me.
