Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?”


Will they find delight in the Almighty? Will they call on God at all times?


When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.


Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;


‘The “gods” know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.


those whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are set with knives to devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among the human race.


When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For this is a people without understanding; so their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favour.


Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.’


‘Gather together and come; assemble, you fugitives from the nations. Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood, who pray to gods that cannot save.


Therefore my people will go into exile for lack of understanding; those of high rank will die of hunger and the common people will be parched with thirst.


All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.


No-one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins.


Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.


All of them are hot as an oven; they devour their rulers. All their kings fall, and none of them calls on me.


Hear this, you who trample the needy and do away with the poor of the land,


Furthermore, just as they did not think it worth while to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.


If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
