‘I lifted you up from the dust and appointed you ruler over my people Israel, but you followed the ways of Jeroboam and caused my people Israel to sin and to arouse my anger by their sins.


Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.


The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.


But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks.


My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.


But your dead will live, Lord; their bodies will rise – let those who dwell in the dust wake up and shout for joy – your dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead.


All the trees of the forest will know that I the Lord bring down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall. I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. ‘ “I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.” ’


Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?


‘Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?
