I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.’


Ahithophel said to Absalom, ‘I would choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David.


They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s; the poison of vipers is on their lips.


For I hear many whispering, ‘Terror on every side!’ They conspire against me and plot to take my life.


Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous.


You love every harmful word, you deceitful tongue!


Truthful lips endure for ever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.


The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.


haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,


‘They make ready their tongue like a bow, to shoot lies; it is not by truth that they triumph in the land. They go from one sin to another; they do not acknowledge me,’ declares the Lord.


Friend deceives friend, and no-one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning.


They produced false witnesses, who testified, ‘This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.
