They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.


He tears me down on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope like a tree.


I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.


They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow.


For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?


I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of the Lord’s wrath.


But the rich should take pride in their humiliation – since they will pass away like a wild flower.


Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.


For, ‘All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
