He says to himself, ‘Nothing will ever shake me.’ He swears, ‘No-one will ever do me harm.’


But you laugh at them, Lord; you scoff at all those nations.


They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, ‘Who will see it?’


They plot injustice and say, ‘We have devised a perfect plan!’ Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.


They say, ‘How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?’


They say, ‘The Lord does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.’


When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong.


He said to me, ‘Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, “The Lord does not see us; the Lord has forsaken the land.” ’


He answered me, ‘The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, “The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.”


but they do not realise that I remember all their evil deeds. Their sins engulf them; they are always before me.


Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,


When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.’
