Then Jacob called for his sons and said: ‘Gather round so that I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.


They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days.


‘Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in days to come,’ declares the Lord. Here ends the judgment on Moab.


‘Yet I will restore the fortunes of Elam in days to come,’ declares the Lord.


Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.’


but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you were lying in bed are these:


Afterwards the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.


My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted and what Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord.’


‘I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a sceptre will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the people of Sheth.


Then Balaam got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.


‘ “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.


But mark this: there will be terrible times in the last days.


In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practised divination.


Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.


Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: there are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.
