So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.


Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.


But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am too young.” You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.


So in my anger I gave you a king, and in my wrath I took him away.


Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.’


The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, ‘Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.’ So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.


He answered, ‘Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?’


The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, ‘Go back to Balak and give him this word.’


Balaam answered, ‘Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?’


The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, ‘Go back to Balak and give him this word.’


“Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord – and I must say only what the Lord says”?
