For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.


‘Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: ‘This is what the Lord says: ‘ “I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown.


They did not ask, “Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and ravines, a land of drought and utter darkness, a land where no-one travels and no-one lives?”


As I judged your ancestors in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will judge you, declares the Sovereign Lord.


Moreover, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you want to treat these men like slaves? No, we will not come!’


‘Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.
