The Israelites replied: ‘We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot – nothing else.’


Again they answered: ‘You may not pass through.’ Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.


But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel.


They travelled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go round Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way;


Edom will be conquered; Seir, his enemy, will be conquered, but Israel will grow strong.


as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us – until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.’
