because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.’


So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, ‘Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!’ But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.


How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!


Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.’


Why should the Egyptians say, “It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth”? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.


For the Lord had said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites, “You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.” ’


Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning – there were all the dead bodies!


Their quivers are like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors.


I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.’


If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say,


The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,


‘Get away from this assembly so that I can put an end to them at once.’ And they fell face down.


The Lord said to Moses, ‘Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.’


With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’


Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.’


Then I heard another voice from heaven say: ‘ “Come out of her, my people,” so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues;
