11 The Lord said to Moses, ‘How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?

Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise.


for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.


In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.


‘Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,


So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: “How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me.


Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?


Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him.


‘I have seen these people,’ the Lord said to Moses, ‘and they are a stiff-necked people.


‘How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?


These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt – completely useless!


Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved. How long will you harbour wicked thoughts?


‘ “Yet the people of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws – by which the person who obeys them will live – and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and destroy them in the wilderness.


Throw out your calf-idol, Samaria! My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of purity?


This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Just as I had determined to bring disaster on you and showed no pity when your ancestors angered me,’ says the Lord Almighty,


not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No-one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.


‘How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.


The Lord’s anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath:


‘You unbelieving and perverse generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.’


‘You unbelieving generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.’


But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.’


Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.


If I had not done among them the works no-one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.


In spite of this, you did not trust in the Lord your God,


Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?


And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?


do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness,
