In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the River Habor and in the towns of the Medes.


At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship


Dibon goes up to its temple, to its high places to weep; Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba. Every head is shaved and every beard cut off.


The Lord, the Lord Almighty, called you on that day to weep and to wail, to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth.


‘Both high and low will die in this land. They will not be buried or mourned, and no-one will cut themselves or shave their head for the dead.


So put on sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.

I will turn your religious festivals into mourning and all your singing into weeping. I will make all of you wear sackcloth and shave your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.


You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.
