They answered the king, ‘As for the man who destroyed us and plotted against us so that we have been decimated and have no place anywhere in Israel,


He loved to pronounce a curse – may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing – may it be far from him.


eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,


Woe to you, destroyer, you who have not been destroyed! Woe to you, betrayer, you who have not been betrayed! When you stop destroying, you will be destroyed; when you stop betraying, you will be betrayed.


‘Therefore this is what the Lord says: you have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim “freedom” for you, declares the Lord – “freedom” to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.


‘Before your eyes I will repay Babylon and all who live in Babylonia for all the wrong they have done in Zion,’ declares the Lord.


‘The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.


For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.


‘Consider carefully what you hear,’ he continued. ‘With the measure you use, it will be measured to you – and even more.


Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’


Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.


because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
