You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.


I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice,


Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’


And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it.


And it will be said: ‘Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.’


This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, “We will not walk in it.”


‘So the last will be first, and the first will be last.’


‘For many are invited, but few are chosen.’


‘Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.


‘Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.


Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.


‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.


They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.


‘I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’


strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. ‘We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,’ they said.


Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.


Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the ‘stumbling stone’.
