So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up and struck down Joab and killed him, and he was buried at his home out in the country.


Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.


As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?


They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’


For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.


Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.


‘The time has come,’ he said. ‘The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!’


as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way’ –


And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,


After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?


beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.’


‘Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!


The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.
