54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, ‘Surely he was the Son of God!’

But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, ‘I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.’


And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.


and saying, ‘You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!’


He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, “I am the Son of God.” ’


At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split


The tempter came to him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’


When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.


And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, ‘Surely this man was the Son of God!’


They all asked, ‘Are you then the Son of God?’ He replied, ‘You say that I am.’


The Jewish leaders insisted, ‘We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.’


At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.


When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’


He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.


Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, ‘Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.’


Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, ‘Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight.


When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment.


But the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.


and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.


At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
