Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,


‘Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.


Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.


Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?’ He denied it, saying, ‘I am not.’


As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, ‘Crucify! Crucify!’ But Pilate answered, ‘You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.’


The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.


Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, ‘Why didn’t you bring him in?’


But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported,


At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.
