In the dark, thieves break into houses, but by day they shut themselves in; they want nothing to do with the light.


My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey.


Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.


When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.


‘Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.


So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.


‘But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.


‘Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.


‘Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back – whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or at dawn.


He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,


It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or towards daybreak.


But understand this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.


Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.’


‘Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.’


Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.
