Fear the Lord and the king, my son, and do not join with rebellious officials,


and he asked them, ‘Whose image is this? And whose inscription?’


Jesus replied: ‘ “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”


Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”’


Then Jesus said to them, ‘Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.’ And they were amazed at him.


He said to them, ‘Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.’


And they began to accuse him, saying, ‘We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.’


But Peter and John replied, ‘Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!


Peter and the other apostles replied: ‘We must obey God rather than human beings!


Give to everyone what you owe them: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honour, then honour.
