So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.


“These who were hired last worked only one hour,” they said, “and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.”


It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.’ And they rebuked her harshly.


But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, ‘This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.’


All the people saw this and began to mutter, ‘He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.’


But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’


At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’


Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, ‘Does this offend you?


When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him.


in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.


These people are grumblers and fault-finders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
