‘ “Every grain offering you bring to the Lord must be made without yeast, for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in a food offering presented to the Lord.


The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.


How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’


Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.


When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.


They discussed this among themselves and said, ‘It is because we didn’t bring any bread.’


But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising, he said to them: ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?


‘Be careful,’ Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.’


Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.


Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’


Then his disciples said to each other, ‘Could someone have brought him food?’


‘A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.’
