This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: his mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.


Someone told him, ‘Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.’


‘Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?


On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.


and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.’


‘No-one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.


Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?’ And they took offence at him.


But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?


The child’s father and mother marvelled at what was said about him.


Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,


When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.’


Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.


He said, ‘The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘ “though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.”


Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.


On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,


After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.


His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’


However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.


Jesus’ brothers said to him, ‘Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.


For even his own brothers did not believe in him.


They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.


Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas?


I saw none of the other apostles – only James, the Lord’s brother.
