When they reached the threshing-floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father.


And all the people went up after him, playing pipes and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.


And you will sing as on the night you celebrate a holy festival; your hearts will rejoice as when people playing pipes go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.


I will build you up again, and you, Virgin Israel, will be rebuilt. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful.


‘To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the market-places and calling out to others:


For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.”


Jesus answered, ‘How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.


When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and the people playing pipes,

A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.


They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling out to each other: ‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.”


Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. ‘Stop wailing,’ Jesus said. ‘She is not dead but asleep.’
