It is time for you to act, Lord; your law is being broken.


The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant.


The Lord says: ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.


‘The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been determined must take place.


He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.


Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.’


(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.


So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, ‘Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?’


Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.


For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.


I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.


I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!’


He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshipped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
