‘See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.


They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’


The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’


But when Herod heard this, he said, ‘John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!’


They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’


And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous – to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.’


They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’


When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.’
