It was revoked on that day, and so the oppressed of the flock who were watching me knew it was the word of the Lord.


Simon and his companions went to look for him,


Jesus replied, ‘Let us go somewhere else – to the nearby villages – so that I can preach there also. That is why I have come.’


The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan.


If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.’


So the Pharisees said to one another, ‘See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!’


They came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan – the one you testified about – look, he is baptising, and everyone is going to him.’
