‘ “By what means?” the Lord asked. ‘ “I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,” he said. ‘ “You will succeed in enticing him,” said the Lord. “Go and do it.”


‘Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.


The Lord said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.’ Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.


The Lord said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.’


One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: ‘Power belongs to you, God,


who sit among the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat the flesh of pigs, and whose pots hold broth of impure meat;


But whoever sacrifices a bull is like one who kills a person, and whoever offers a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck; whoever makes a grain offering is like one who presents pig’s blood, and whoever burns memorial incense is like one who worships an idol. They have chosen their own ways, and they delight in their abominations;


And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.


‘Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.


And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.


When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.


Jesus answered, ‘You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.’


You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.


When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison
