Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.


By your hand save me from such people, Lord, from those of this world whose reward is in this life. May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies; may their children gorge themselves on it, and may there be leftovers for their little ones.


Their tombs will remain their houses for ever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves.


From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.


In the days of her affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into enemy hands, there was no-one to help her. Her enemies looked at her and laughed at her destruction.


That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain,


‘Sir,’ they said, ‘we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, “After three days I will rise again.”


And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.


At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores


In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.


‘I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’

The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.


Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.


Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.


so that no-one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them.


He chose to be ill-treated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
