Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.’


He called in a loud voice: “Cut down the tree and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.


‘ “When you enter the land and plant any kind of fruit tree, regard its fruit as forbidden. For three years you are to consider it forbidden; it must not be eaten.


I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.


Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.


‘ “Sir,” the man replied, “leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig round it and fertilise it.


The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.’


He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.


If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
