He may let them rest in a feeling of security, but his eyes are on their ways.


‘See, it stands written before me; I will not keep silent but will pay back in full; I will pay it back into their laps –


he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the Lord’s temple.


‘Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: “The days go by and every vision comes to nothing”?


as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,


The rest seized his servants, ill-treated them and killed them.


Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.


The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.


‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.


and said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’


Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.


For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.


In fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face.


And there rejoice before the Lord your God – you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns who have no land allotted to them or any inheritance of their own.


For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.


They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, revelling in their pleasures while they feast with you.


They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity – for ‘people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.’


for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.’


In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people, of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.’
