But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.


Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you.


He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.


‘Yet you ask, “Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?” Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.


‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.


So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.


‘Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.


Because of this, God in his wisdom said, “I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.”


Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practise them.


Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.


Then Joshua said, ‘You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.’ ‘Yes, we are witnesses,’ they replied.
