Joshua 7:1 - New International Version (Anglicised)

1 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things; Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.

The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.


Again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, ‘Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.’


When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.


This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.


They abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and worshipped Asherah poles and idols. Because of their guilt, God’s anger came on Judah and Jerusalem.


and prayed: ‘I am too ashamed and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.


Your wickedness only affects humans like yourself, and your righteousness only other people.


Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.

When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful in regard to the devoted things, did not wrath come on the whole community of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.” ’
