Joshua 24:27 - New International Version (Anglicised)

27 ‘See!’ he said to all the people. ‘This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.’

For I dreaded destruction from God, and for fear of his splendour I could not do such things.


then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.


Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonour the name of my God.


Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the Lord has spoken: ‘I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.


rebellion and treachery against the Lord, turning our backs on our God, inciting revolt and oppression, uttering lies our hearts have conceived.


The stones of the wall will cry out, and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.


but for a whole month – until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it – because you have rejected the Lord, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’ ” ’


But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.


‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’


This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live


‘Now write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and make them sing it, so that it may be a witness for me against them.


And when many disasters and calamities come on them, this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do, even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.’


‘Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.

I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed.


They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.


And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness Between Us – that the Lord is God.


Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.


I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no-one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.


Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’
