But Joab replied, ‘May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?’


So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.


From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord, they conspired against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish, but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there.


They confronted King Uzziah and said, ‘It is not right for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord. That is for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful; and you will not be honoured by the Lord God.’


‘You must not bring those prisoners here,’ they said, ‘or we will be guilty before the Lord. Do you intend to add to our sin and guilt? For our guilt is already great, and his fierce anger rests on Israel.’


Lord, the God of Israel, you are righteous! We are left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it not one of us can stand in your presence.’


They have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled the holy race with the peoples around them. And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness.’


They would not be like their ancestors – a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.


They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”


Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them.


‘ “But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors – their unfaithfulness and their hostility towards me,


It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of wrongdoing against the Lord.’


for the Amalekites and the Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword.’


If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.’


‘Say to the Israelites: “Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the Lord is guilty


If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.


I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.


So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,


But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them,


for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods, and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you.


See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?


the whole assembly of Israel gathered at Shiloh to go to war against them.


With him they sent ten of the chief men, one from each of the tribes of Israel, each the head of a family division among the Israelite clans.


‘The whole assembly of the Lord says: “How could you break faith with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the Lord and build yourselves an altar in rebellion against him now?


And are you now turning away from the Lord? ‘ “If you rebel against the Lord today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel.


For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.’
