The Lord appeared to Abram and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’ So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.


All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring for ever.


May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now reside as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.’


They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying,


Their children went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites, who lived in the land; you gave the Canaanites into their hands, along with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with them as they pleased.


You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.


He remembers his covenant for ever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations,


It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.


He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.


So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey – the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.


They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law; they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster on them.


Take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given you the land to possess.


‘Command the Israelites and say to them: “When you enter Canaan, the land that will be allotted to you as an inheritance is to have these boundaries:


You are about to cross the Jordan to enter and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you have taken it over and are living there,


The Lord your God will cut off before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess. But when you have driven them out and settled in their land,


When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, ‘Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,’


Then the Lord said to him, ‘This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, “I will give it to your descendants.” I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.’


Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.


Each of these towns had pasture-lands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns.


Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess.


‘After Jacob entered Egypt, they cried to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.
