14 The people of Joseph said to Joshua, ‘Why have you allotted us only one portion of land and one share for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.’

But his father refused and said, ‘I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.’


He blessed them that day and said, ‘In your name will Israel pronounce this blessing: “May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.” ’ So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.


And to you I give one more ridge of land than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.’


Ephraim will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh from east to west.

To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those listed.


They married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in their father’s tribe and clan.


So Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance.


‘If you are so numerous,’ Joshua answered, ‘and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites.’
