As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.


(But Geshur and Aram captured Havvoth Jair, as well as Kenath with its surrounding settlements – sixty towns.) All these were descendants of Makir the father of Gilead.


The Gadites lived next to them in Bashan, as far as Salekah:


He said to them, ‘If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you, you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession.
